HullSense LLC ("HullSense," "we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use the HullSense mobile application and associated hardware device (collectively, the "Service"). Please read this policy carefully. If you do not agree with its terms, please discontinue use of the Service.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information

When you create a HullSense account, we collect:

  • Email address
  • Password (stored in encrypted form via Firebase Authentication)
  • Name (optional, if provided)
  • Phone Number (optional): If you choose to enable SMS alerts, we collect the US mobile phone number you provide in Settings. This number is used solely to deliver transactional alert messages and is never sold or shared with third parties for marketing purposes.

1.2 Device Data

The HullSense hardware device transmits the following data to our servers:

  • Battery voltage readings and calculated charge percentage
  • Water level readings and pump cycle events
  • Device connection type (Bluetooth, WiFi, or cellular)
  • Signal strength
  • Timestamps of all readings and events

1.3 Location Data

With your permission, the HullSense device collects GPS coordinates from its onboard GPS module. This location data is used to:

  • Display your vessel's position on the in-app map
  • Support geofencing alerts when your vessel moves outside a defined area
  • Calculate distance from your home dock
  • Record GPS route polylines (start coordinates, end coordinates, and the full path) for automatic trip log entries — Pro subscribers only. Route data is stored per trip in Firestore and retained for up to 12 months.

Location data is transmitted only when the device has an active GPS fix. You may disable geofencing features within the app at any time. Automatic trip logging can be disabled in app settings, which stops route recording.

1.4 Usage and Technical Data

We may automatically collect certain technical information, including:

  • App version and device operating system
  • Crash reports and error logs
  • Feature usage patterns (e.g., which screens are visited)
  • Device identifiers (e.g., Firebase installation ID) used to associate the app with your account and deliver push notifications

This data is used solely to improve the reliability and performance of the Service.

1.5 Phone Number and SMS Consent

If you choose to enable SMS text alerts (a Pro subscription feature), we collect your mobile phone number. By providing your phone number and enabling SMS alerts, you consent to receive automated text messages from HullSense regarding your vessel's status, including battery alerts, high-water detection, and geofence events.

  • Message frequency varies based on your vessel activity and configured alert thresholds
  • Message and data rates may apply, as charged by your mobile carrier
  • SMS alerts are optional and can be disabled at any time in the HullSense app settings
  • You may also opt out by replying STOP to any SMS message you receive from us

Your phone number is shared with Twilio, Inc. solely to deliver SMS messages on our behalf. We do not share your phone number with any other third parties for marketing purposes.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain the HullSense Service
  • Send push notifications and alerts for battery, water level, and geofence events
  • To send SMS text alerts (battery, high water, geofence) to users who have an active Pro subscription and have explicitly opted in. SMS alerts are optional and can be disabled at any time in app Settings.
  • Process subscription payments via Stripe
  • Respond to customer support requests
  • Monitor and improve app performance and reliability
  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes.

3. How We Share Your Information

3.1 Service Providers

We share data with trusted third-party service providers who assist us in operating the Service, including:

  • Firebase (Google LLC) — authentication, database, and push notifications
  • Stripe, Inc. — subscription payment processing
  • Twilio, Inc. — SMS message delivery for opted-in Pro subscribers. Twilio may process your phone number to deliver messages on our behalf. See Twilio's privacy policy at twilio.com/legal/privacy.
  • Hologram, Inc. — cellular data connectivity for LTE-enabled devices
  • Google Maps Platform — map display within the app
  • OpenWeatherMap — weather data used for Boat Health reports and contextual weather information displayed in the app
  • Resend — transactional email delivery (account notifications, support communications)
  • Anthropic, PBC — automated Boat Health report generation for Pro subscribers. Purpose: producing the daily 7 AM summary from derived sensor data. See Section 12 for details.

These providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and may not use it for their own purposes.

3.2 Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to valid legal process, such as a subpoena, court order, or government request.

3.3 Business Transfers

In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or a portion of our assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you via email or prominent notice in the app before your data is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

4. Data Retention

We retain your account and device data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law or for legitimate business purposes such as fraud prevention.

Device sensor readings (voltage, water level readings, location history) are retained for up to 12 months by default. You may request earlier deletion by contacting us.

5. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including:

  • Encrypted data transmission (TLS/HTTPS)
  • Firebase Security Rules restricting data access to authenticated users
  • Device authentication tokens stored securely in hardware flash memory

No method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

6. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
  • Correction — request correction of inaccurate data
  • Deletion — request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Portability — request your data in a machine-readable format
  • Opt-out of push notifications — manage push notification preferences in your device settings or within the app
  • Opt-out of SMS alerts — disable SMS text alerts in the app settings at any time, or reply STOP to any SMS message from us; you will continue to receive push notifications if enabled

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@hullsense.io.

7. Children's Privacy

The HullSense Service is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us immediately and we will delete it.

8. Third-Party Links

The Service may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties and encourage you to review their privacy policies.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy in the app and, where appropriate, sending an email notification. Your continued use of the Service after changes become effective constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.

10. SMS Alerts

HullSense offers optional SMS text alerts to Pro subscribers. By enabling SMS alerts in the app, you consent to receive automated text messages from HullSense at the phone number you provided. Message and data rates may apply. Message frequency varies based on device activity — typically low frequency, only when alert conditions are triggered. You can opt out at any time by disabling SMS alerts in the HullSense app Settings, or by replying STOP to any message. For help, reply HELP to any message or contact support@hullsense.io.

12. Automated Boat Health Summaries

Pro subscribers receive a daily Boat Health report generated each morning at 7 AM. To produce these summaries, HullSense sends derived sensor data to Anthropic, PBC — a third-party service that generates the report text using a large language model (AI). Anthropic acts as a sub-processor on our behalf and is subject to the data-handling commitments described below.

What we send to Anthropic

We send only the information needed to generate the report — no raw personally identifiable information is included. Specifically:

  • Derived battery metrics (voltage, estimated state of charge, and trend over the past 14 days)
  • Bilge activity summary (water level readings and inferred pump cycles)
  • Approximate boat location (marina name or GPS coordinates, used to contextualize the report)
  • Device connection status (last-seen time and connection type)
  • 7-day weather forecast and NOAA tide data already associated with your boat's location

How Anthropic uses this data

Anthropic processes the above data solely to generate the report text returned to HullSense. Anthropic does not retain this data beyond what is required by its standard API terms, and we do not permit Anthropic to use your data to train its models. For more information, see Anthropic's privacy policy at anthropic.com/legal/privacy.

Retention

HullSense retains the generated report text for up to 30 days so you can view past reports in the app. The underlying sensor data used to generate the report is retained according to the standard device data retention policy described in Section 4.

Opting out

Boat Health reports are a Pro feature. If you do not want your sensor data sent to Anthropic, you can disable Boat Health reports in the HullSense app settings at any time. Disabling this feature does not affect your Pro subscription or any other Pro features.
